Flat and low-slope roofs on modern homes
Many mid-century modern houses in and around Columbus have flat roofs, very shallow pitches or long, low wings joined to a pitched section. Shingles are not made for these surfaces. On a roof with little or no fall, water sits instead of running off, and anything short of a continuous membrane will eventually let it through.
For those sections we install single-ply membrane: TPO, a heat-welded white sheet that reflects summer sun, or EPDM, a tough rubber membrane. Both are laid as one continuous surface with sealed seams, turned up the parapets and walls, and finished around the drains and scuppers these roofs rely on.
The details that matter most are the transitions: where a flat roof meets a shingled one, where it meets a clerestory wall, and where water leaves the roof. On a modern home these are often design features in their own right, and we work them out carefully so the house keeps its clean lines and stays dry.

Can a low-slope roof be shingled instead?
Only above a minimum pitch. Below it, shingles cannot shed water fast enough and leaks follow. We measure the pitch of every section and specify membrane wherever shingles would not perform.
