The historic downtown grew around the old canal, and the homes nearby include narrow frame houses and brick buildings with steep gables, dormers and chimneys. Their roofs frequently hide decades of patchwork: mismatched shingles, flashing sealed with tar, and valleys that have been layered over instead of rebuilt.
