Box gutters on the East Row
Many Victorian homes in the East Row Historic District were built with box gutters: troughs set into the eave and hidden behind the cornice, so the roofline looks clean from the street. When they work, they are handsome. When the lining fails, water goes straight into the cornice and the top of the wall, often without a single drip showing outside.
Before we replace a roof on one of these homes, we assess the box gutters from above. Some are sound enough to stay, and the new roof is detailed to drain into them. Others have rotted to the point where converting to a hung seamless gutter is the better long-term answer, with the eave closed in and finished properly.
We show you which you have, with photographs, and the decision stays with you. Where the house sits in the historic district, check with the city about exterior changes before work begins. Steep slopes, turrets and tall chimneys are common on these houses too, and each is flashed as its own detail when the new system goes on.
