A ranch or bi-level spreads its roof over the whole footprint of the house, so there is a lot of shingle facing the weather. On the open lots common across the township, with fewer tall trees to break it up, a summer storm hits that broad surface at full strength. Edges and ridges take the worst of it, and an old roof starts losing tabs there first.
